Brock Turner of Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors Sets New World Record on Rowing Ergometer
2/21/2010
TULSA OK - Brock Turner, a member of the Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors set a new world
record on the rowing machine ergometer on Sunday Feb 21st. Brock managed to row
213 kilometers in a twenty-four hour period as part of the Tulsa Juniors Row-A-Thon
Fundraiser. The previous record stood at just under 212km.
"You realize this is where all the hours you put into erging and lifting
really count," said Turner of his efforts on the ergometer. "All the
times you thought the workouts were impossible but you did them anyway, and that
is the discipline." Turner continues, "The most difficult section of
rowing was the 23rd hour when I realized I was a little behind world record pace
and I needed to pick it up a little."
The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors coaching staff was duly impressed by Turner's effort.
"Brock's feat shows absolutely phenomenal mental toughness. He has been wanting
to take a crack at the world record for quite some time and now he has achieved
that goal" said Head Coach Neil Bergenroth. "We are all very proud of
Brock and all of his accomplishments at the club, great stuff!"
In addition to his new world record, Brock competed at the World Indoor Rowing
Championship in Boston, MA on February 14th, placing 18th out of a field of 185
rowers the weekend before. Following the event Brock was invited to attend a Junior
National Team identification camp at the Harvard boathouse.
Brock's new world record was part of an annual Row-A-Thon fundraiser held by the
Tulsa Junior Rowing program that benefits the club by creating funds to purchase
new equipment. Each member of the team must row a minimum of 30km during a twelve
hour period of rowing. The total number of meters recorded by the team was almost
1,500km.
